Design Brief
The existing home is a 1930s double brick building located on a 715m² site in Beauty Point, Mosman.
The owner's brief was to renovate the rear half of the home including the living, dining, kitchen and outdoor living areas.
A previous extension from the 1980s left the rear part of the home ill-proportioned with a narrow dining area, boxed-in kitchen and a low false ceiling covering the home's original ornate ceiling.
Narrow circulation spaces restricted traffic flow and the layout limited natural light into the spaces.
Access to the outdoor living area was limited to a small set of double doors positioned off the lounge and furthest away from the kitchen, restricting flow to the outside space.
Our aim was to create more coherent kitchen, living and entertaining spaces with better indoor-outdoor connections.
Design Solution
The false ceiling was removed to reveal the original ornate ceiling and a new skylight added for more natural light and to vent heat in summer.
The kitchen has been repositioned and designed for modern-day living with an island bench and butler’s pantry. A salvaged door has been repurposed as a cavity slider for the pantry.
Expansive openings have been constructed to create better flow and a larger open plan living area while preserving the ornate cornices and resolving conflicting ceiling heights.
A new window in the dining area provides a lush green outlook and improved natural light.
A nature-inspired palette of materials and finishes has been used to create a calm environment.
